Statement: Escalation of tensions in Israel and Gaza

Ministry Statements & Speeches:

Aotearoa New Zealand is dismayed at the ongoing violence in Israel and Gaza. We call for de-escalation to avoid further loss of life.

Attacks on civilians are unacceptable. We note our grave concern at reports of civilian casualties in Gaza following an Israeli airstrike. The killing of children is particularly egregious. Rocket fire from Gaza that targets Israeli civilians is also of deep concern. We call on parties to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians.

New Zealand condemns the indiscriminate firing of rockets from Gaza into Israel. We also condemn reprisals that have caused civilian casualties. Israelis and Palestinians deserve to live peacefully, in safety and security. We call for restraint and active efforts towards the resumption of constructive dialogue. This is the best path for a durable and lasting peace.
