One of our projects to lift the income of smallholder farmers in Viet Nam by improving production and post-harvest practices.

Viet Nam graduated from Least Developed Country status to Lower Middle Income Country status in 2010. The remaining challenges for Viet Nam include low development status of rural and ethnic minority peoples, vulnerability to natural disasters including floods and droughts, and relatively low per capita income for its development level. Building a better-quality education system that boosts productivity and innovation is also a priority for Viet Nam.

Our development cooperation is made up of activities delivered specifically in Viet Nam, as well as multi-country and regional initiatives, Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships, and as need arises, humanitarian response. Our country-specific development cooperation with Viet Nam is delivered in partnership with Vietnamese organisations and focuses on:

  • Agriculture: Increase economic and food security benefits from agriculture and increasing resilience to climate change;
  • Resilience: Strengthen resilience to environmental disaster by reducing the risk and impact (economic and human losses) of dam failures and flooding; and
  • Education: Improve workforce skills and capabilities.
