The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) are working together on a joint Long-term Insights Briefing in 2024/2025.

MFAT and MBIE have analysed feedback on the subject matter of our joint Long-term Insights Briefing. The topic and scope of the Briefing has now been confirmed by our Chief Executives as ‘New Zealand’s productivity performance in a changing world: strategic choices in economic development and international trade’.

MFAT and MBIE will seek further feedback on a draft of the Briefing later in 2025 before finalising the Briefing and presenting it to Parliament before the end of the year.

What are Long-term Insights Briefings?

Long-term Insights Briefings are a requirement of all government departments under the Public Service Act (2020). They are ‘thinkpieces’, designed to explore medium to long term trends and the risks and opportunities they present to New Zealand. Briefings are prepared independently of Ministers.
