Development cooperation partnership with Philippines

New Zealand’s targeted development cooperation contributes to enhanced stability and resilience in the Philippines.

Our long-standing development partnerships dates to the 1970s. We value our partnership with the Philippines and appreciate the close working relationship across Government, civil society and private sector. Our development investments in the Philippines comprises country-specific activities, multi-country and regional initiatives, as well as Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships.

Our development initiatives in the Philippines focus on:

  • Climate and economic resilience: renewable energy, climate smart agriculture, environmental management and disaster resilience
  • Peace and security: good governance and leadership, social cohesion, and preventing violent extremism (PVE); and
  • Knowledge and skills: scholarships, professional development and civil society leadership training.

Our country-specific activities focus on the region of Mindanao, which has been hindered by decades of civil unrest and violent extremism. A new five-year initiative I-LEAD Indigenous Women and Girls – Leadership and Empowerment in Ancestral Domains aims to strengthen leadership amongst indigenous women and girls in Mindanao and improve their livelihood opportunities continues this commitment.
