UNGA78 Third Committee: United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy Report

Ministry Statements & Speeches:

Statement delivered by First Secretary, Emily Buist-Catherwood

Thank you for the presentation of today’s report.

We welcome the significant progress made towards the implementation of the UN Disability Strategy across the UN system. New Zealand continues to advocate for continued progress, as it is clear there is still a long way to go.

New Zealand calls for accessibility in all parts of the UN system, and the importance of the inclusion of persons with disabilities’ leadership and involvement in the successful implementation of the strategy.

As a global leader on the rights of persons with disabilities, New Zealand is proud to co-lead, with Mexico, the Third Committee biennial resolution on the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

New Zealand also strongly supports continued progress on the UN Disability Inclusion Strategy and the system-wide efforts that are being taken to advance disability inclusion and to ensure that the UN leads by example.

Persons with disabilities often face multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination, and we continue to encourage the UN to strengthen efforts to address these.

We would like to ask, after four years of implementation, how can Member States best support the Strategy’s continued success going forward?

Thank you.
