Tonga 2014 - Tropical Cyclone Ian
Tropical Cyclone Ian struck Tonga at Category Five strength on 11 January 2014 causing significant damage to the Ha’apai and Vava’u island groups. In Ha’apai the majority of houses and other small buildings were extensively damaged or destroyed, 90% of the electricity network needed repair, and many crops were destroyed. One person died in the cyclone and several others were injured. Vava’u suffered superficial damage to buildings and the destruction of crops. The other island groups, including Tongatapu, were left largely unscathed.
In response to Tropical Cyclone Ian, the New Zealand Government contributed $296,962 to fund the relief and early recovery programmes of three NGOs.

This project will provide 3,000 people with water and sanitation facilities, 1,000 people with basic health and nutrition supplies and 1,315 children with temporary learning spaces and targeted psychosocial support.

Philippines 2013 - Typhoon Haiyan
Making landfall on 8 November 2013 in Eastern Samar province, Typhoon Haiyan is the deadliest storm on record to hit the Philippines. It left a wide path of destruction and debris in its wake affecting over half of the country’s 82 provinces. Over 5,000 people died and approximately 18,000 were injured. It's estimated that 12.9 million people were affected, with 4 million displaced.
In response to Typhoon Haiyan, the New Zealand Government contributed $1,496,925 to fund relief and early recovery activities of eight NGOs.

This project will provide 1,700 families with essential food and non-food supplies as well as establishing three child-centred spaces for 380 children.

Syrian Refugee Crisis 2013
More than 2.5 million refugees have fled Syria since the conflict began four years ago creating an ongoing humanitarian crisis. This number continues to grow with the UN estimating that there will be 4.1 million refugees and 2.7 million vulnerable people in host communities in Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon and Türkiye by the close of 2014. Children are suffering disproportionally as a result of the conflict with the number of refugee children expected to exceed 2 million by December 2014. Social services that aim meet the needs of both refugees and host communities are under immense strain, including health, education, shelter, nutrition, and water and sanitation services.
In 2013 the New Zealand Government contributed $788,053 to fund NGO activities that will work to meet these priority needs.
Caritas New Zealand
This project will provide urgent relief supplies, psychosocial and healthcare services to 1,500 Syrian refugees in Lebanon over 10 months.
