Our relationship with Brazil

New Zealand and Brazil enjoy a friendly relationship, celebrating 60 years of diplomatic relations in 2024.

We have a shared commitment to democratic institutions and the international rule of law, working together on a number of issues of mutual interest, including human rights, climate change and nuclear disarmament.

Trade and economic

As countries that export agricultural goods, New Zealand works closely with Brazil through the World Trade Organisation (WTO), particularly on agricultural trade liberalisation through our shared membership of the Cairns Group and on WTO reform as members of the Ottawa Group. We also cooperate as a part of the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases(external link).

Education and tourism account for a large portion of New Zealand’s export profile to Brazil. Brazilians account for around a third of all students and tourists in New Zealand from Latin America.

New Zealand and Brazil are both participants in the Global Trade and Gender Arrangement (GTAGA), which promotes efforts towards women’s economic empowerment and greater participation in international trade.

The latest information about New Zealand's trade profile with Brazil is available on the New Zealand Trade Dashboard(external link).

People and culture

New Zealand and Brazil have growing people-to-people links.

We have a visa waiver agreement, and passport holders of each country can visit the other for tourism purposes without a visitor visa for up to three months. New Zealand citizens visiting Brazil are granted a visa at their arrival at the border. Brazilian citizens visiting New Zealand need to apply for a NZeTA(external link) before travelling.

New Zealand operates a Brazil Working Holiday Scheme(external link), which allows young Brazilian citizens (18-30 years) to live and work in New Zealand for up to 12 months.

Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships(external link) are available to Brazilian citizens.
