The fourth New Zealand-China Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Change was hosted virtually by China on Thursday night between Minister for Climate Change James Shaw and Chinese Minister for Ecology and Environment Huang Runqiu.
The dialogue covered updates on domestic climate change policy and global climate ambition, as well as a discussion of areas for bilateral cooperation. The two ministers discussed some of the differences and commonalities between our approaches to climate change adaptation and mitigation, and areas where we could learn from each other. Other topics of discussion included priorities for the upcoming COP27 in Egypt, achieving our respective domestic transitions, China’s hosting of the COP15 Conference on Biodiversity and the importance of climate finance and green finance to climate action.
China is an important partner in climate change issues, and our cooperation is underpinned by our bilateral Arrangement on Climate Change Cooperation, signed in 2014. The ministerial level dialogue plays an important role in affirming our interest in working together with China and is an opportunity to discuss issues of relevance to the global conversation on climate change. Continued cooperation with China on climate change is also consistent with the New Zealand-China Leaders’ Statement on Climate Change, adopted by Prime Minister Ardern and Premier Li Keqiang in 2019.
