Statement by Craig J. Hawke, Permanent Representative to the New Zealand Permanent Mission to the United Nations, 15 March

Christchurch and New Zealand has suffered an unprecedented attack.   The Prime Minister has condemned this senseless act of violence against innocent people and described this as one of New Zealand’s “darkest days”.

This act of terror goes against the core of what New Zealand stands for. We represent diversity, kindness, compassion. We will stand up for these values at home and at the United Nations.  These values will not and cannot be shaken by this attack.

New Zealand is known around the world as a peaceful and safe country and we will remain just that.

We thank everyone who has reached out here at the United Nations and New York to offer their condolences, and support.  This means a lot to us all in these difficult circumstances.
