Our relationship with Romania
New Zealand established full diplomatic relations with Romania in 1974, however the relationship has developed considerably since Romania joined the European Union in 2007.
New Zealand granted visa-free status to Romanian visitors for visits of up to three months in 2007, which has seen an increase in people-to-people flows.
A large number of New Zealand families adopted Romanian orphans during the 1990s. In 1946 there were fewer than 50 Romanians living in New Zealand. By 2014, there were over 2,300 Romanian-born residents living here (largely in Auckland).
