47th session of the Human Rights Council Adoption of the Universal Periodic Review of the Federated States of Micronesia

Ministry Statements & Speeches:

Delivered by Lucy Duncan, New Zealand Permanent Representative, 8 July 2021.

Madam President

New Zealand warmly welcomes the opportunity to comment on the adoption of the Universal Periodic Review of the Federated States of Micronesia.

We acknowledge the Federated States of Micronesia’s ongoing commitment to protecting human rights and its efforts since the last UPR review to actively address the human rights challenges facing its people and through its acceptance of the UPR recommendations.

New Zealand commends the Federated States of Micronesia’s commitment to improve its capacity to address human rights issues, including work towards the establishment of a National Human Rights Institution.

We are encouraged by the Federated States of Micronesia’s acceptance of the need to work towards ratification and implementation of key international human rights treaties.

We also applaud the progress made to protect the rights of women, and note work done to mainstream gender in national and state programmes and the establishment of a national coordinator on the issue of violence against women.

Finally, New Zealand acknowledges the threat posed by climate change to the ability of the people of the Federated States of Micronesia to fully realise and enjoy their rights. We reiterate our commitment to supporting the Federated States of Micronesia to combat the effects of climate change.

Thank you Madam President.
