Mr Vice President,
New Zealand thanks the Special Rapporteur for his update on the human rights situation in Myanmar.
The ongoing crisis in Myanmar continues to be of deep concern to New Zealand.
New Zealand continues to condemn the coup and ongoing violence against civilians. We call for the military regime to fully implement the commitments it made under the Five-Point Consensus, including ending the violence and a fully inclusive dialogue between parties. We further call for the release of political prisoners and the return to civilian rule.
New Zealand strongly supports ASEAN’s continued endeavours to facilitate dialogue towards achieving an end to the crisis, including through implementation of the Five-Point Consensus.
We welcome the ongoing work of the Human Rights Council and the Independent Investigative Monitoring Mechanism for Myanmar.
We note with concern the military regime’s preparations for an electoral process. As things stand the situation on the ground in Myanmar would not be conducive to the running of a free, fair and inclusive electoral process.
New Zealand remains deeply concerned about the plight of Rohingya and other minorities in Myanmar. The ongoing conflict and human rights abuses has exacerbated the humanitarian situation of the most vulnerable.
Mr Special Rapporteur, we would welcome your views on what the further extension of the state of emergency means for the human rights of the people of Myanmar.
