Ministry Statements & Speeches:
Madame President
New Zealand thanks the Special Rapporteur for his comprehensive report and hopes that it provides a catalyst for meaningful action
New Zealand condemns the actions of the military regime in Myanmar in the strongest possible terms and calls for the democratic will of the people of Myanmar to be respected.
New Zealand condemns the use of violence against peaceful protesters. We urgently call on the Myanmar military to stop the use of excessive and lethal force against protestors, and for those responsible for the violence to be held to account.
New Zealand calls for the return to civilian government and the immediate and unconditional release of all those who have been arbitrarily detained by the military. This includes political and civil society leaders, democracy activists, journalists and advisors, some of whom are also foreign nationals.
We further support recommendations to enable freedom of expression in Myanmar including the full restoration of internet access and immediate cessation of intimidation or violence towards the media.
New Zealand joins the Special Rapporteur in strongly encouraging Myanmar’s military regime to urgently address human rights concerns and to restore civilian government.
Thank you, Madame President
