Joint Statement on California-New Zealand Climate Cooperation

Ministry Statements & Speeches:

Addressing the climate crisis demands urgent and collective action. The first global stocktake of progress toward achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement demonstrated that the world is not yet on track.

With this in mind, New Zealand and California are renewing our commitment to ambitious climate action.

This commitment is underlined by a shared recognition of the need to limit global warming to 1.5C, to urgently build resilience to the impacts of climate change and to support a global shift towards economies that are green, efficient, and sustainable.

In furtherance of the Memorandum of Cooperation that has been in effect since 2022, New Zealand and California have much to offer each other to address the climate crisis, and will continue to share information and best practices, and collaborate on policy and regulation. New Zealand and California are committed to continuing our work together on transportation electrification, emission trading schemes, clean energy, nature-based solutions, climate smart agriculture, and circular economy.

Specifically, we will accelerate our collaboration on innovative solutions within the agricultural sector, renewable energy, grid decarbonization, low-carbon fuels, and carbon storage in natural sinks, among other critical topics.
We will also consider new areas of alignment and shared interest, with a view to accelerating climate linkages and building collaborative green economies. For example, we will explore how we might work together to strengthen shared interests such as geothermal energy, offshore wind, methane satellites, and areas of transportation decarbonization for our mutual and global benefit.

In all our work we acknowledge the important role of partnership with Indigenous peoples.

The cooperation between New Zealand and California, as outlined in this statement, along with the existing Memorandum of Cooperation, is intended to contribute to achieving global climate goals and demonstrate the power of and our commitment to partnerships in doing so.
