Text message scam - what to do

We are aware of an SMS text message scam impersonating the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which asks recipients to enter a code to access our services. If you receive this message, do not follow the instructions or click on any links.

If you receive an SMS message that you suspect is a scam, follow this advice:

  • Do not click on any links.
  • If you have clicked on a link and provided any card, bank or personal details, contact your bank immediately.
  • If you have lost any money through a scam, report it to the Police immediately.
  • Forward the text for free to 7726 so that Te Tari Taiwhenua, Department of Internal Affairs can investigate it.
