Ministry Statements & Speeches:
The recent sentencings of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, U Win Myint and Dr Myo Aung are a further examples of the misuse of the justice system in Myanmar since the 1 February military coup. The blatant pursuit and incarceration of elected political leaders on multiple politically-motivated charges, and the refusal to respect the basic rights to a fair trial and adequate legal representation, are further examples of the military regime’s serious disregard for the rule of law.
Aotearoa New Zealand remains deeply concerned at this latest development in the military regime’s ongoing oppression and reversal of Myanmar’s democratic progress.
We continue to call for the immediate release of all those arbitrarily detained by the military regime, and for the restoration of democratic governance that represents the will of the people of Myanmar. Aotearoa New Zealand remains committed to working with the international community, including ASEAN, to this end.
