Our approach

In October 2014, New Zealand was elected to serve a two-year term on the UN Security Council, receiving strong support from across the UN membership.

New Zealand’s Permanent Representative, Gerard van Bohemen, votes in the UN Security Council.

Despite the many global challenges during our two years on the Council, New Zealand performed with distinction and played a widely commended role as one of the most constructive and active elected members in recent years.

Specifically, we worked to ensure the Security Council performed better in:

  • preventing conflicts and emerging crises
  • improving engagement with stakeholders, including troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping operations
  • ensuring all states, including small states, received a fair hearing
  • improving the transparency, inclusiveness and responsiveness of the Council.
