Women, Peace and Security

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security was a ground-breaking resolution adopted in 2000. In later years, this has been followed by nine complementary UNSC resolutions. Together these resolutions set out four ‘pillars’ of priority issues: prevention of violent conflict; meaningful participation of women at all levels of peace and security governance;  the protection of rights for women and girls in fragile, conflict and post-conflict situations; and ensuring women’s engagement and addressing their needs in peacebuilding, relief and recovery.

National Action Plan Implementation Report

This inter-agency Implementation Report examined the progress made on New Zealand’s most recent National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security, 2015–2019. The report is centred around the four ‘pillars’ of women, peace and security: prevention, participation, protection, and peacebuilding, relief and recovery. It also examines reflections from civil society(external link) on the National Actiom Plan’s implementation. New Zealand is currently considering the best approach to refreshing its Women, Peace and Security National Action Plan. In the meantime, New Zealand’s 2015-2019 National Action Plan and its 2021 Implementation Report remain a good resource for understanding New Zealand’s general approach to WPS and its implementation.
