Te Hurumanu is a partnership group created to work alongside the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team. It brings a Tirohanga Māori perspective to the strategic policy and organisational issues facing Manatū Aorere.

Purpose

The purpose of the group is to ensure Te Ao Māori views, values, and interests are taken into account as the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team consider the most pressing policy and organisational challenges facing the Ministry. 

Te Hurumanu will:

  • provide leadership and/or advice on the current and future direction of key strategic priorities
  • recommend and guide the co-creation of a partnership model that reflects an authentic and enduring Te Tiriti partnership
  • advocate what the priority needs are for iwi/Māori in the context of foreign policy and organisational issues, and the recommendations required to approach these issues
  • facilitate a collaborative forum to wānanga emerging issues of interest to iwi/Māori
  • provide thought leadership and advice concerning the strategic direction of Manatū Aorere
  • identify and agree upon insight opportunities for iwi/Māori 
  • contribute to the uplift of Manatū Aorere’s capability and understanding of Mātauranga Māori

It is anticipated that Te Hurumanu will meet every second month, or as the need arises.

Members

The group consists of:

Members of the group were appointed based on their experience, standing and integrity in Te Ao Māori, demonstrated success in various governance roles, and for their unique understanding of the machinery of Manatū Aorere.

Manatū Aorere looks forward to leveraging off this expertise and leadership to enable a greater understanding of iwi/Māori expectations, and to help the Ministry realise the promise of Te Tiriti partnership.

Members’ responsibilities

Te Hurumanu will seek to include views and needs from mana whenua, iwi, Māori groups, and government in the spirit of partnership. Members should seek to act broadly in the interests of Māori and the New Zealand public.

Members will apply their leadership and expertise with the aim of influencing outcomes that align with iwi/Māori and Aotearoa New Zealand’s values and interests in a national and global setting more broadly.

Remuneration

It is intended that members of the Group will be remunerated for their participation, preparation and attendance to meetings using the Cabinet Fees Framework for members appointed to bodies in which the Crown has an interest.
